In order for the Studierendenwerk to be able to fulfill its duties, the Hochschulgesetz (Higher Education Act) allows an appropriate fee to be raised for this purpose. The amount of the contribution is set by the Studierendenwerk's Verwaltungsrat (administrative board) and is reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Science and Health of Rheinland-Pfalz.
The semester fee, which all students must pay upon enrollment and re-registration, consists of three parts: the AStA fee, the semester ticket, and the Studierendenwerk fee.
The Studierendenwerk fee and the semester ticket are solidarity contributions and cannot be refunded, regardless of whether the services are used personally. This is the only way to offer the services of the Studierendenwerk and the semester ticket at a very reasonable price.
Only students with a severe disability, who are allowed to use public transport free of charge anyway, can have their semester ticket reimbursed.
